Party Animals was developed by Recreate Games, a studio founded by Luo Zixiong, former design director at Smartisan. The game was first teased on Twitter in September 2019, with open demos available to the public in June and October 2020. A July 1, 2020 press release indicated that the game would release on consoles in the future. On May 25, 2022, developers stated the target release date was hopefully within 2022, with possible delays due to quality and compliance approvals. The release date of September 20, 2023 was announced during Summer Game Fest on June 8, 2023.

The game offers three modes: Last Stand, Team Score, and The Lab. In Last Stand, players aim to be the last animal standing; Team Score divides eight players into teams of four competing to complete an objective; The Lab also has two teams of four but focuses on eliminating the opposing team like Last Stand. Players control animals such as puppies, kittens, ducks, bunnies, sharks, dinosaurs, and unicorns, using punches, tosses, jumps, kicks, and headbutts, along with weapons. Damage can temporarily knock out players, who usually recover unless thrown off the map or into hazards.

The base roster includes 45 characters, with the corgi Nemo serving as the mascot. Character names often incorporate contrast and dark humor, such as "Barbie" for a gorilla and "Bacon" for a pig. Other characters include Underbite the lizard, Tiagra the tiger, Macchiato the cat, Otta the otter, Morse the moose, Harry the duck, Coco the alligator, Carrot the rabbit, Valiente the cow, Moonmoon the owl, Hachi the shibu inu dog, Uni the unicorn, Garfat the cat, Lloyd the goose, Max the husky dog, Levi the cat, Googoo the pigeon, Karatan the rhino, Curtis the iguana, Lou the beagle dog, Fluffy the golden retriever dog, Sparky the bull terrier dog, Hammer the hammerhead shark, Bruce the great white shark, Bob the bear, Yurusa the bat, Kiko the cat, Kato the husky dog, Tuskarr the walrus, Lotus the dragon, Sunny the bulldog, Snow the samoyed, Kola the koala, Dundun the pallas cat, Spike the hedgehog, Shin the Elephant, Gopher the marmot, Dodo the dodo bird, Maneki the lucky cat, Sam the german shepherd dog, Fuguee the red panda, and Fubao the panda. Collaborations have added characters from other media, including Ori and Naru from Ori and the Blind Forest, Cabbage Dog from Vegetable Fairies, The Lamb from Cult of the Lamb, and Om Nom from Cut the Rope.

Reader's Guide

Party Animals received "generally favorable" reviews from critics on Metacritic based on 16 reviews, with praise for its gameplay and visuals. However, at launch on Steam, user reviews were "Mostly Negative" due to aggressive monetization of in-game skins and the lack of an offline mode, which contradicted the game's description. The developers responded that a mistranslation caused the erroneous description. The game's significance is marked by its strong initial community interest, evidenced by the 2020 playtest's high concurrent player count and Twitch viewership. Later, on May 13, 2026, the official Party Animals X account announced a contest for making a movie using artificial intelligence, with a $75,000 cash prize. This drew negative criticism and led to review bombing on Steam, with users calling the game and company a "sellout" and "AI slop embracer." The game's legacy includes both its early popularity and later controversy over its AI-related contest.
