Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2

Tactical shooter with realistic bullet physics and stealth sniping.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2, a tactical shooter from City Interactive, hit shelves in 2013 for Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. It's the third game in the Sniper: Ghost Warrior series and follows up the original. The gameplay leans on stealth, close-quarters takedowns, and long-range sniping, with bullet physics that account for distance, wind, and drop.

The story kicks off with U.S. Marine Captain Cole Anderson and CIA Officer Diaz in the Philippines, tasked with blowing up an old Russian radar post after a tip about mercenaries brokering a biological weapon deal there. While Diaz destroys the post, he hears chatter about a captured spy. Diaz leads a rescue, with Anderson providing cover from a cave. They save the operative, but Anderson spots an old acquaintance, Merinov, among the dealers. The team gets ambushed by an enemy sniper; only Anderson escapes death or capture. He heads to a village to intercept the bio-weapon and his captured teammates, saving Diaz just as guards kill another teammate, Gomez. The bio-weapon is lost, and as they flee, Diaz mutters, "it's Sarajevo all over again."

Anderson ends up in the brig for disobeying orders to rescue his team instead of securing the WMD. He flashes back to Sarajevo, 1993, where he and his spotter Carl Maddox were photographing genocide by Serbian forces under Marko Vladić. They meet Russian contact Merinov inside the city. After taking the photos, Maddox, disturbed by the atrocities, goes rogue to kill Vladić, and Anderson follows. Merinov shows them a vantage point, then leaves for transport. Anderson shoots Vladić, but Merinov betrays them to the Serbs. Anderson escapes and learns from command that Maddox is a traitor working with Merinov, who manipulated them to kill Vladić for gun-running profits. Ordered to kill Maddox, Anderson shoots him in a moving jeep and keeps the shell casing.

Back in prison, Diaz pulls strings to get Anderson out, needing him to kill Merinov, who's selling the bio-agent to a jihadi warlord in Kashmir—a deal that could spark war between Pakistan and India. They head to Tibet. After an accident that loses their gear, they recover it and reach a nest overlooking the ambush site. As Anderson aims at Merinov, he sees Maddox, who survived the shot, emerging from a helicopter. Maddox spots them and alerts the mercenaries.

The plot begins with player controlling U.S. Marine Captain Cole Anderson in the Philippines, alongside CIA Officer Diaz, to destroy a Russian radar post and investigate a biological weapon deal. The story involves a betrayal by Merinov, an old acquaintance, and a flashback to Sarajevo in 1993 where Anderson and his spotter Carl Maddox were tasked with photographing genocide during the Bosnian War. The game's release was delayed multiple times from an initial August 2012 date, eventually launching on 12 March 2013. Reader's Guide

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 received 'mixed or average' reviews according to Metacritic. Gameplanet praised the game for not being as linear as other modern shooters, calling it 'easily its greatest strength'. GameSpot commended the script, acting, graphics and sound, noting that 'a well-written, well-acted script give the game a great action-movie vibe, as do authentic-looking visuals and animations powered by the CryEngine 3'. The game's sound effects, including weapon noises, enemy voices, and atmospheric sounds, were highlighted for enhancing tension. The game was released in both a normal retail version and a limited 'Bulletproof Steelbook Edition' that included the soundtrack, a booklet on the history of sniping, and extra downloadable content. The downloadable content 'Siberian Strike' is a prequel where the player has no tactical support due to the black operation nature of the assignment.
