Lore & Background

Hunt: Showdown was originally in development at Crytek USA under the title Hunt: Horrors of the Gilded Age, envisioned as a cooperative multiplayer game and a spiritual successor to Darksiders. After Crytek USA was shut down due to financial issues, development moved to Crytek headquarters in Germany. The game was re-announced in May 2017 under the new title Hunt: Showdown, becoming a competitive multiplayer game where players combat both other players and AI-controlled enemies on a large, open-world-like map. The game is set in the late-19th century, featuring era-appropriate weapons and classes, and incorporates procedurally generated enemy placement, obstacles, and objectives to ensure no two missions are identical.

Reader's Guide

Hunt: Showdown received generally-positive reviews upon release, praised for its innovative gameplay loop. The game's core mode, Bounty Hunt, supports up to 12 players who hunt one or two of six boss monsters across four maps, using scarce ammunition and a variety of weapons from shotguns to rifles like the Mosin-Nagant. Players collect clues to locate the monster's lair, kill it to claim a bounty, and then survive to reach an extraction point while other players can steal the bounty. The game also features Soul Survivor, a battle royale mode, and Bounty Clash, a faster-paced mode added in October 2024. An updated version for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S was released on 15 August 2024 under the title Hunt: Showdown 1896, after which the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions were delisted.
