The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard

A pirate adventure on the island of Stros M'Kai.

Unlike other Elder Scrolls titles, it features a protagonist with a set name, race, and skills.[1] From a third-person viewpoint, players explore Redguard's free-roaming action-adventure world.[1] GameRankings, a review aggregation site, indicated that Redguard earned favorable critical responses.[2]

Making and release

Bethesda drew inspiration from Tomb Raider, Prince of Persia, and the Ultima series.[3] Development spanned two and a half years, culminating in a November 14, 1998 release.[4] Gameplay involved keyword-based NPC conversations, item usage for puzzle-solving, and progression through an "epic" narrative.[3] Over thirty minutes of animation were produced by XL Translab, a Bethesda Softworks subsidiary.[3]

Real-time 3D environments for Stros M'Kai's island and town were built using the XnGine engine.[5] Character creation was absent from Redguard.[5]

What the cited sources add

The Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages notes that Redguard was distributed only with a Windows-based InstallShield installer despite being a DOS game.[6] That same guide explains that Redguard could be run with either a software renderer or a hardware accelerated Glide renderer.[6] The guide also states that Redguard and Battlespire were high-resolution games requiring a very fast computer for emulation.[6]
