Plot

The player controls Captain Frank Hayden, an elite Delta Force operative and former leader of Black Saber, the President's personal black bag unit. Hayden and his team attempt to recover a briefcase nuclear bomb code-named Red Mercury from terrorist mercenary Vladimir Styanovich, known as Vlady the Vicious, who operates from a coastal Syrian town. Hayden damages Vlady's escaping helicopter with small arms fire, but Vlady, fleeing over the ocean, tries to disarm the bomb and re-evaluate, only to find it rearms itself. He leaves the bomb on the helicopter and jumps into the ocean, but the blast kills him and capsizes the U.S. aircraft carrier serving as Hayden's base, also destroying the extraction helicopter and knocking the team unconscious. The story then shifts to 72 hours earlier, showing Hayden and his team destroying a cache of Stinger missiles in the Congo jungle. Afterward, CIA agent Kate Daniels and Russian FSB agent Yuri Entropov recruit Hayden for a mission to stop Vlady from purchasing a Red Mercury bomb from a Russian research facility in Kazakhstan. Hayden HALO jumps in, infiltrates the facility, and witnesses the deal. He recognizes Vlady as Wesley Holden, a former Black Saber member who lost an arm on a past mission and holds a grudge against Hayden. Vlady kills the scientist and escapes with the bomb. Hayden learns that Yuri's inside agent is Galena, a Russian spy with a tumultuous romantic history with Hayden.
