Plot

While on vacation on Pokitaru, Ratchet and Clank meet a girl named Luna, who is writing a school report on heroes. Shortly after, Luna is kidnapped by mysterious robots. Clank discovers an artifact from an ancient race called the Technomites. Ratchet is skeptical, but Clank believes they exist. They set out to save Luna and encounter Captain Qwark, who is searching for his biological parents. On Kalidon, Ratchet is kidnapped by Luna, who faked her kidnapping, and Clank is left in a junkyard on Metalis. Clank transforms into his Ultra-Mech form to rescue Ratchet. Ratchet's DNA is taken to produce an army of clones. Emperor Otto Destruct, leader of the Technomites, wants to use Ratchet's DNA for the ultimate soldier. Luna is revealed to be a robotic puppet and ship. On Dayni Moon, Luna explains the clone plot and that the Technomites are bitter for not receiving credit for their technological advances. After destroying Luna, Clank is infected with a computer virus. Ratchet uses a shrink ray to enter Clank and help eliminate intruders. Clank obtains the factory coordinates, and they head to Quodrona. Otto reveals his real plan is to steal the intelligence of every being in the galaxy using a machine that transfers intelligences.

Development and release

High Impact Games, composed of former Insomniac Games employees, developed Size Matters as their first title. It was revealed at the E3 2006 pre-show and took about 18 months to develop from scratch. The game was released for the PSP on February 13, 2007, and in fall 2008 Sony began packing it with PSP hardware bundles. A PlayStation 2 port was released in March 2008 due to high fan demand, removing online multiplayer but enhancing graphics and controls. On July 16, 2024, the PSP version was re-released for PlayStation 4 and 5 as an emulated version with enhanced graphics, save states, rewinding, custom controls, and trophies.

Reception

The PSP version received generally favorable reviews, while the PS2 version received mixed or average reviews, according to Metacritic. Game Informer rated it 9/10 and named it Handheld of the Month for April 2007. IGN gave the PSP version 9.0/10. The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences nominated Size Matters for Handheld Game of the Year at the 11th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards. IGN gave the PS2 version a score of 6/10, citing poor graphics, dull gameplay, and technical issues. Size Matters was one of the best-selling PSP games of 2007, and its PSP hardware bundle sold over one million units.
