Development

Little information emerged until late 2005, when the recently merged publishers SCi and Eidos Interactive placed development on hold for unspecified reasons. The project was then assumed cancelled, as no further press releases appeared and Eidos moved to other projects. In 2011, after acquiring the series rights from Square Enix Europe, original developer Stainless Games announced a new Carmageddon title in early pre-production. Concept art and test screens were released on the official site. The game, Carmageddon: Reincarnation, was funded via Kickstarter in 2012 with a $400,000 target, reached in 10 days. A stretch goal of $600,000 for Mac and Linux versions was met by the campaign's end in July, raising $625,143, but those versions were never released. The game launched in May 2015 on Steam.

Carmageddon: Max Damage

Carmageddon: Max Damage is an expansion update to Carmageddon: Reincarnation, adding cars and stages along with improved graphics and performance. It was released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in July 2016, available both digitally and physically, with the disc version distributed by Sold Out Sales & Marketing. A Windows version followed on 28 October, provided as a free update to existing Reincarnation owners on Steam.

Reception

The PC launch of Carmageddon: Reincarnation earned a Metacritic score of 54%. Critics acknowledged its resemblance to older Carmageddon games, but opinions split on whether that retro feel worked today. A major complaint was its terrible performance at release, as it could not keep a steady framerate on any machine. The PS4 version, titled Max Damage, scored 51% on Metacritic. Reviewers often found the gameplay and controls unconvincing, and many called the graphics dated, though performance issues drew less attention.
