Playing career
Ballard began his junior career in the United States Hockey League (USHL), playing for the United States National Development Team in 1999–00 and the Omaha Lancers the following season. With the Lancers in 2000–01, he recorded 51 points in 56 games, led league defensemen with 22 goals, earned First Team All-Star honors, and was selected for the 2001 USHL All-Star Game. He helped Omaha win the Clark Cup as league champions, scoring seven points in ten playoff games.
He then played three seasons of college hockey for the Minnesota Golden Gophers of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), joining a defensive corps that included future NHL players Jordan Leopold and Paul Martin. As a freshman in 2001–02, Ballard was named the WCHA's pre-season rookie of the year. He made his collegiate debut on October 5, 2001, with two assists against North Dakota, and began his rookie campaign on a six-game point streak.
He finished with 10 goals and 23 points in 41 games, earning WCHA All-Rookie Team honors. In the WCHA playoffs, he scored the series-clinching overtime goal against North Dakota. The Golden Gophers advanced to the 2002 NCAA Championships, winning the national title with a 4–3 overtime victory over Maine; Ballard scored the first goal of the final. The following season, he recorded a college career-high 41 points in 45 games, ranking fourth among NCAA defensemen and third in team scoring.
He was named a WCHA All-Academic and University of Minnesota Scholar Athlete. He helped the Gophers win the Broadmoor Trophy as WCHA playoff champions and earned WCHA Final Five All-Tournament Team honors. Minnesota repeated as national champions in 2003, defeating New Hampshire 5–1 in the final, and Ballard received NCAA West Regional All-Star honors.
International play
Ballard made his international debut with the United States at the 2000 IIHF World U18 Championships in Switzerland, contributing a goal and an assist in six games as the U.S. finished eighth. He played for the under-20 team at the 2002 World Junior Championships in the Czech Republic, recording a goal and an assist in seven games; the U.S. lost in the quarterfinal to Russia and placed fifth after a 3–2 consolation win over Sweden. He debuted with the senior U.S. men's team at the 2004 World Championships in the Czech Republic, joining the squad after forward Scott Gomez withdrew.
As the lone NCAA player on the team, Ballard helped the U.S. win a bronze medal. His lone goal of the tournament, and his first in men's international competition, came in a 7–1 round-robin win over Ukraine. He then made three consecutive World Championship appearances starting in 2007. At the 2007 tournament in Russia, he recorded an international career-high three assists; the U.S. was eliminated in a 5–4 shootout loss to Finland in the quarterfinal.
The following year, in Quebec City and Halifax, he had two assists in five games and ranked seventh among team defensemen in average ice time per game; the U.S. finished sixth after another quarterfinal loss to Finland. At the 2009 IIHF World Championship in Switzerland, Ballard made his second bronze medal game appearance but lost 4–2 to Sweden. He contributed a goal and two assists in nine games, ranking second on the squad in plus-minus (+3) and sixth among team defensemen in average ice time per game.
Playing style
Keith Ballard played as a two-way defenseman, bringing value at both ends of the ice. His physical style featured punishing hip checks, and he topped his team in hits for his first five NHL seasons. He also blocked shots effectively. On offense, his quick, fluid skating helped him transition the puck out of the defensive zone. At the 2012 Canucks SuperSkills Competition, he posted the fastest lap time at 13.440 seconds. Known for his intensity, he carried a fierce competitive streak.
Personal life
Keith Ballard grew up in Baudette, Minnesota, with his parents Steve and Joanne and his sister Jessie.
