Moroi

A Romanian vampire or ghost that drains energy from the living.

A moroi (plural moroi; female moroaică, plural moroaice) is a vampire or ghost from Romanian folklore. Sometimes it is the phantom of a dead person that leaves its grave to drain energy from the living. The word can also refer to an infant who died unbaptized. Its origin is uncertain, but the Romanian Academy traces it to the Old Slavonic word mora, meaning "nightmare." The suffix -oi, also found in strigoi and bosorcoi, turns feminine words masculine and adds both augmentation and pejoration. In Hungarian culture, a similar bogeyman called the morák or norák appears in Transylvania and Hungary. This creature is imagined as a witch-like being born from dead unbaptised babies.
