Upcoming HBO fantasy series rebooting the Harry Potter books.
A television adaptation of J. K. Rowling’s fantasy book series is in the works for HBO, serving as a fresh start for the story rather than a continuation of the earlier films. The project is a co-production between HBO, Warner Bros. Television, Brontë Film & TV, and Heyday Films. No official casting announcements have been made for the lead roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, or Hermione Granger as of yet.
Plans for the series first emerged in January 2021, with the intention of producing a faithful adaptation of the novels over roughly a decade. Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod are steering the creative direction. A casting call for Harry, Ron, and Hermione went out in September 2024, drawing around 40,000 hopefuls; however, no actors have been confirmed for these roles. Principal photography kicked off that July at Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire, England. The first season, titled *Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone*, will consist of eight episodes and is slated to premiere in the United States on HBO and globally on HBO Max on 25 December 2026. A second season, adapting *Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets*, was ordered in May 2026.
The first season follows Harry, Ron, and Hermione as they navigate life at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, forming a close friendship while confronting the looming threat of Lord Voldemort’s return.
