God of War is an upcoming American fantasy drama television series for Amazon Prime Video, created by Ronald D. Moore. It adapts the Norse mythology portion of the video game franchise from Santa Monica Studio. The story follows Kratos and his son Atreus as they travel across the nine realms to scatter the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye, from the highest peak.
The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, and PlayStation Productions. Development began in March 2022, with the project officially ordered that December. No official casting announcements have been made for the roles of Kratos or Atreus. The main cast includes Teresa Palmer as Sif, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Louis Cunningham as Modi, and Island Austin as Thrud (season 1). Recurring cast members include Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn as Brok, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, Ben Chapple as Magni, Evelyn Miller as Gna, and Sonya Walger as Freya.
After the success of the original 2005 game, a live-action film was announced but stalled in pre-production with multiple changes in director and writer. Following the 2018 game’s shift to Norse mythology, rumors of a film adaptation of that installment circulated, but in May 2021 a Sony spokesperson said no film was in development. In March 2022, Deadline Hollywood reported that a live-action television series was in negotiations with Amazon Prime Video, developed by Mark Fergus, Hawk Ostby, and Rafe Judkins. Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan confirmed the series was in development in May 2022. The series was officially ordered that December, produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios with PlayStation Productions. Executive producers included Santa Monica Studio’s Cory Barlog and Yumi Yang, PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, and Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee, with Santa Monica’s Jeff Ketcham as co-executive producer. The series adapts the two Norse mythology games: 2018’s *God of War* and its 2022 sequel *God of War Ragnarök*.
