The series was first announced in October 2022 as a Friday the 13th prequel developed by A24 with Bryan Fuller as showrunner. Fuller stated that the streaming rights allowed access to everything under the Friday the 13th umbrella. Writing began in early 2023, with Kevin Williamson set to write an episode, and Adrienne King cast in a recurring role. Production was halted in May 2023 due to the Writers Guild of America strike. In May 2024, Fuller was fired after A24 chose a different direction, and Williamson also departed. At one point, Charlize Theron was considered for the role of Pamela Voorhees. Filming was set to begin in August 2024, though no official reports confirm the series' budget.

In August 2024, Brad Caleb Kane was announced as the new showrunner. Linda Cardellini was cast as Pamela Voorhees in March 2025. Principal photography began on June 20, 2025, under the shooting title Mama's Boy, in New Jersey, including locations in Jersey City, West Milford, Clifton, and Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco in Blairstown—the same camp used in the 1980 original film. Filming concluded in October 2025. Post-production, including audio mixing, was completed by April 2026. The series is scheduled to premiere on Peacock on October 15, 2026, with all eight episodes released simultaneously. It will also air on Sky Atlantic and stream on Now in the UK and Ireland, and stream on HBO Max in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Preview screenings are planned for the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival and New York Comic Con.
