Lore & Background

The tournament was won by West Germany, for the third time. They beat defending champions Argentina 1–0 at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. Italy finished third and England fourth. This was the last tournament to feature a team from West Germany, as well as the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, and Czechoslovakia.

Costa Rica, Ireland and the United Arab Emirates made their first appearances. Cameroon became the first African team to reach the quarter-finals. The 1990 World Cup is widely regarded as one of the poorest in terms of games, with a record low average of 2.21 goals per game and a then-record 16 red cards. It saw the introduction of the pre-match Fair Play Flag.

Overly defensive tactics led to the back-pass rule in 1992 and three points for a win. The tournament was one of the most watched in television history, with an estimated 26.69 billion non-unique viewers. It was the first World Cup recorded and transmitted in HDTV. At the time, it was the most watched World Cup in history in non-unique viewers, later bettered only by the 1994 and the 2002 editions.

Reader's Guide

The host selection vote was held on 19 May 1984 in Zürich, Switzerland. Italy was chosen ahead of the USSR by 11 votes to 5. Italy had previously hosted in 1934. 116 teams entered qualification, with 22 qualifying along with host Italy and defending champions Argentina. The United States competed for the first time since 1950. Twelve stadiums in twelve cities were selected. The group stage was organized so each group played in two cities in close proximity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happened to the US team in the 1990 World Cup?

The Americans lost all three group-stage matches in Italy, scoring just one goal while surrendering seven, and were knocked out without a single point. It was their third World Cup appearance after 1930 and 1950, and fans still regard it as the darkest stretch of the pre-professional era.

Who were the US opponents in the 1990 World Cup group?

The squad was drawn alongside West Germany, Yugoslavia, and Colombia. Across those three fixtures the Americans managed only one goal in total before being eliminated at the group stage.

Why do USMNT fans remember 1990 as such a low point?

The roster was essentially a collection of part-time professionals and semi-amateurs who were simply outclassed by the world's top national sides. The 0-0-3 record and seven goals conceded highlighted just how far behind the US still was, setting the stage for the rebuilding push that led to hosting in 1994.

How many World Cups had the US played before 1990?

The tournament in Italy marked the third appearance for the USMNT, following their 1930 and 1950 campaigns. That long gap between showings made the 1990 result feel especially stark for a program still finding its footing.

What was the US final record in the 1990 World Cup?

The Americans finished with zero wins, zero draws, and three losses, scoring one goal and conceding seven. They were eliminated in the group stage without earning a point.
