Youth and amateur career

Jordan Morris grew up in Mercer Island, Washington, and played for Eastside FC from 2004 through 2012. With the B94 Red team under coach Dan Strom, he helped the squad capture six of its seven Washington State titles and earn two third-place finishes at the US Youth Soccer National Championships in 2011 and 2012. He was named to the Best XI in 2011 and won the Golden Ball in 2012, the same year he was recognized as the NSCAA Washington State Player of the Year and a High School All-American.

After a single season with the Sounders FC youth academy in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy, he signed a letter of intent to play at Stanford University in February 2012. As a freshman, he played all 21 matches, led Pac-12 freshmen in assists and points, and earned first team All-Pac-12 honors. He also played for Seattle Sounders FC U-23 in the Premier Development League. In his sophomore year, Stanford won its first Pac-12 title since 2001.

As a junior, Morris scored 13 goals and added 3 assists, leading the Cardinal to both the Pac-12 and NCAA championships. He netted five of Stanford’s 12 tournament goals, including one just 87 seconds into the final against Clemson. On January 8, 2016, he received the Hermann Trophy as the top player in NCAA Division I soccer.

Club career

In January 2016, Morris trained with German club Werder Bremen at their winter camp, and Bremen extended his trial after which he played in a friendly against Inter Baku PIK and recorded an assist. Bremen offered a contract, but Morris turned it down to return to the United States. After winning the NCAA championship, there was speculation he would turn professional, and coach Jürgen Klinsmann stated he 'obviously has to.' His decisions to stay at Stanford for a third year and to play professionally in the U.S. rather than Europe were criticized.

On January 5, 2016, Morris announced he would forgo his senior season to join a professional team. He signed with Seattle Sounders FC on January 21, receiving MLS's highest-ever Homegrown Player contract worth roughly $250,000 a year. He debuted in a friendly on February 9, made his professional debut against Club América in the CONCACAF Champions League on February 23, and debuted in MLS the following week against Sporting Kansas City. He scored his first MLS goal on April 16 against the Philadelphia Union, then scored in his next three consecutive games, matching and then surpassing the Seattle rookie scoring record set by Steve Zakuani in 2009.

The Sounders won their first MLS Cup after a run from ninth place, aided by Morris's goalscoring and midseason acquisition Nicolas Lodeiro. Morris was named MLS Rookie of the Year with 12 regular season goals, the second-highest for a league rookie behind Cyle Larin in 2015. He scored in the Western Conference Final second leg while sick with an undisclosed virus and injured. In early 2021, he was loaned to EFL Championship side Swansea City but returned after four matches due to an ACL tear. In 2025, he passed Raúl Ruidíaz for the most goals in Seattle Sounders FC history with 87 goals.

International career

In May 2013, Morris was named to the U.S. under-20 squad for the Toulon Tournament, making three appearances. He also played for the U.S. under-23 team, scoring in a 5–1 win over Barbados on August 6, 2014. On August 28, 2014, he received his first senior call-up for a friendly against the Czech Republic, becoming the first college player called into the squad since Chris Albright in 1999. He made his international debut in November in a 4–1 defeat to Ireland.

On April 15, 2015, he scored his first senior goal against Mexico in an international friendly. In the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup Final, he scored the winning goal against Jamaica, becoming joint top scorer of the tournament with three goals. After a lengthy injury recovery, he received his first World Cup qualifying call-up since September 2017 on January 21, 2022. He was named to the U.S. squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup alongside teammate Cristian Roldan, and appeared as a substitute in the first group stage match against Wales on November 21, 2022.

Personal life

Jordan Morris came into the world in Seattle, Washington, born to Michael and Leslie Morris.
