Aim Down Sights
Pull the barrel to your eye, slow the world, and put a round where it matters.

Aim Down Sights (ADS) is a core shooting mechanic in the Uncharted series developed by Naughty Dog. It allows the player to pull a firearm up to eye level, narrowing the field of view and increasing shot precision at the cost of reduced mobility. In practice, the player holds the aim input to raise the weapon, then releases to drop back to hip-fire for mobility. The mechanic sits at the heart of Uncharted's action design, bridging the gap between the series' cinematic set-pieces and its moment-to-moment gunplay.
Lore & Background
In the Uncharted world, every gunfight is a dance between chaos and precision. Nathan Drake, a scrapper more than a soldier, does not have the luxury of a stable firing platform. He is sprinting across a crumbling temple, ducking behind a sandbag in a rain-soaked alley in Mumbai, or bracing a rifle against a rusted railing above a chasm. In each of those moments, the decision to raise the weapon to his eye is the difference between a spray of wasted rounds and a single, decisive hit.
The mechanic reflects the series' broader design philosophy: Uncharted wants the player to feel the weight and commitment of each shot. Raising the weapon is not free. Your legs slow, your field of vision narrows, and for a brief instant you are exposed and vulnerable. That trade-off is the engine of tension in every firefight, and it is why the player must constantly weigh the safety of hip-fire mobility against the lethality of a steady, aimed shot.
Across the four mainline games, the ADS animation and responsiveness evolved in step with the series' growing ambition. The first game's aiming felt functional but slightly detached; by Uncharted 2: Among Thieves the weapon model sat closer to the camera, the transition was snappier, and the cover-peek integration felt more organic. Uncharted 3 and Uncharted 4 pushed the animation further, with Drake's body language, breathing, and weapon handling all contributing to a sense that the player is genuinely shouldering a heavy object under stress.
Reader's Guide
Aim Down Sights in Uncharted works by holding the aim button (R1 on PlayStation). While held, Drake raises his weapon to eye level, the camera zooms in slightly, and your movement speed drops. Release the button to return to hip-fire and full mobility. ADS interacts directly with cover.
You can hold the aim button while behind a wall or crate to peek and fire without fully exposing yourself. This peek is your best friend: tap the aim button while pressed against a corner, and Drake will lean out just enough to line up a headshot before slipping back into safety. In Uncharted 4, you can also aim while sprinting for a quick snap-shot, though accuracy suffers. Practice the 'quick-scope' rhythm—raise, fire, drop—to chain precision kills without getting pinned down.
And remember: in multiplayer, ADS slows your strafe speed, so hip-fire is often better at close range unless you're confident in that first bullet.
