Background
The event was first built around Jon Jones defending the light heavyweight title against Rashad Evans, but a hand injury was expected to keep Jones out, so Evans agreed to face Phil Davis instead. On July 12, Davis withdrew with a knee injury. Ortiz first said no to replacing him, and a rematch with Lyoto Machida stalled when Machida's camp asked for more money and Dana White refused. Ortiz then changed his mind and took the fight. Elsewhere, a planned title bout between José Aldo and Chad Mendes was dropped when Aldo was hurt, so Mendes met Rani Yahya instead.
