Teams

A total of 49 clubs from 48 of UEFA’s 54 member associations took part in the tournament. Luxembourg sent a team for the first time. Each association could enter one club, but the reigning champions, Kairat Almaty, earned an automatic spot as title holders, which gave Kazakhstan the right to a second entry. To decide which round each team started in, UEFA ranked them using a coefficient based on results from the previous three seasons.

The top four sides, with the title holders automatically seeded first, went straight to the elite round. The next 16 teams, ranked 5 through 20, entered the main round. The remaining 29 clubs, ranked 21 to 49, began in the preliminary round. For the preliminary and main rounds, each team was given a seeding based on its ranking for the draw.

Eight clubs were preselected to host preliminary round groups, and six were preselected to host main round groups. The draws for both rounds took place on 2 July 2015 at 13:30 CEST at UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. In the preliminary round, the 29 teams were split into eight groups. Some groups had four teams, with one from each of the four seeding positions, while others had three teams, with one from each of the first three seeding positions.

The eight preselected hosts were drawn first from a separate pot and placed into their groups according to their seeding. After that, the remaining 21 teams were drawn from pots based on their seeding positions. In the main round, 24 teams were divided into six groups of four. Some groups contained one team from each of the first three seeding positions plus one preliminary round group winner.

Other groups had one team from each of the first two seeding positions and two preliminary round winners. The six preselected hosts were drawn first from their own pot and assigned to groups by seeding. Then the other 18 teams, including the eight preliminary round winners whose identities were still unknown at the time, were drawn from pots based on their seeding positions.

Final tournament

The final tournament host was chosen by UEFA from the four competing teams on 11 December 2015. Inter FS staged the event at the Palacio Multiusos de Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Spain, with matches on 22 and 24 April 2016. The final tournament draw took place on 15 March 2016 at 20:30 CET during halftime of the Atlético Madrid versus PSV Eindhoven Champions League round of 16 second leg at Madrid's Vicente Calderón Stadium. The four teams were placed into two semi-finals with no restrictions. In the finals, extra time and penalties could decide a winner if needed, but the third-place match would not use extra time. All times were CEST (UTC+2).
