Lore & Background

The song addresses societal conflicts, particularly race relations and classism, contrasting them at times with broader global conflicts and the hardships of life in the ghetto. It samples Bruce Hornsby and the Range's 1986 song "The Way It Is", whose chorus was slightly reworded, and re-uses lines from "I Wonder If Heaven Got a Ghetto", recorded the same year.

Reader's Guide

Originally produced by Big D The Impossible (Deon Evans) during Shakur's Interscope tenure in 1992, it was remixed in 1998 by Poke of Trackmasters. "Changes" was nominated for Best Rap Solo Performance at the 2000 Grammy Awards, the only posthumous song nominated in that category, and in 2017 Consequence ranked it second among Shakur's greatest songs.
