Lore & Background
The City of New York bought the land in 1945; it had been the site of an old Dutch windmill. Homes and businesses, including two banks, and sections of Hopkins, Ellery, Floyd (now Martin Luther King Jr. Place) and Stockton streets were cleared for construction, and the complex was completed on January 19, 1949.
Reader's Guide
In 1946, 3.2 acres were set aside for a playground, which was rebuilt in 1989. The complex has since taken steps to become more environmentally friendly.
