Prior to forming Claire Voyant, founding members Chris Ross, Ben Fargen, and Victoria Lloyd were part of a different project called Murmur. When the trio realized that Ross could produce what the other members of Murmur's quartet provided, they decided to start their own project. Naming the band proved difficult until Lloyd discovered the name 'Claire Voyant' in a 1940s comic-strip.

The band released their debut album independently in 1995 on their self-label Nocturne. German label Hyperium Records took notice and included Claire Voyant's song 'Her' on their Heavenly Voices IV compilation, which brought the band notability in the European market. Hyperium went on to distribute their second album, Time and the Maiden. Their third album, Love Is Blind, was released in 2002 on Philadelphia indie label Metropolis, which also re-released Time and the Maiden with three bonus tracks for the US market; that reissue peaked at #29 on the CMJ RPM Charts. The project disbanded on September 22, 2009, shortly after the release of its fourth studio album, Lustre.
