Lore & Background
The earliest known docks were discovered in Wadi al-Jarf, an ancient Egyptian harbor of Pharaoh Khufu, dating from c. 2500 BC on the Red Sea coast. A dock from Lothal in India dates from 2400 BC and is the earliest known dock equipped to berth and service ships. The world's first enclosed wet dock with lock gates was the Howland Great Dock on the River Thames, built in 1703. The world's first commercial enclosed wet dock was the Old Dock at Liverpool, built in 1715.
Reader's Guide
Types of docks include wet docks (impounded docks), dry docks, and floating dry docks. Where water level is not controlled, berths may be floating or NAABSA (Not Always Afloat But Safely Aground). A dockyard consists of one or more docks, usually with other structures.
