Lore & Background
Roman authors first described the Germani near the Rhine in the 1st century BCE. Under Emperor Augustus, the Romans attempted to conquer Germania but withdrew after the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9 CE. The Romans later constructed a long fortified border, the Limes Germanicus, to manage the Germanic frontier. Germanic peoples such as the Franks, Goths, Saxons, and Alemanni appear in historical records after the Marcomannic Wars (166–180 CE).
