History

The hospital was founded in 1901 by the Belden Avenue Baptist Church's Steadfast Sunday School class as Chicago Union Hospital. It began in a rented two-and-a-half-story frame building with 30 beds, 20 of which were for patients. A fire destroyed the main building on March 3, 1905. A new hospital building opened in 1909, equipped with an x-ray machine. In 1910, Martha A. Pippereit served as superintendent. When the church group could no longer manage operations, the Masonic Order purchased the hospital in 1921 for $100,000 and renamed it Illinois Masonic Hospital. By the end of the 1930s, the hospital had more than 150 beds. In November 2000, it became a member of Advocate Health Care. The hospital suffered $18 million in losses in 2002 due to reductions in government payments. On April 27, 2015, a new $100 million Center for Advanced Care opened, a 164,000-square-foot facility designed by SmithGroup that centralized cancer care, digestive health, and outpatient surgery.

Graduate medical education

Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center operates ACGME-accredited residency programs in anesthesiology, family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, and radiology. Fellowship programs provide training in cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology. The hospital also offers graduate training in pharmacy, dentistry, and podiatry, with the pharmacy residency accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. More than 300 physicians are trained each year.

Advocate Health Care

Advocate Health Care employs more than 25,000 people and has 4,600 affiliated physicians. It operates 10 acute care hospitals, including two children's hospitals and a specialty hospital for extended care, along with three large medical groups and comprehensive home health and hospice services. The organization is a not-for-profit, faith-based entity related to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the United Church of Christ.
