Gephyrostegus

Small Carboniferous reptiliomorph with uncertain amniote relations.

Gephyrostegus is an extinct genus of gephyrostegid reptiliomorph amphibian from the upper Carboniferous of Nýřany, Czech Republic, about 310 million years old. It was a small, lizard-like animal with a snout-vent length of 22 cm, large eyes, and many small pointed teeth, suggesting an active insectivorous lifestyle. Its phylogenetic position is uncertain; it is now placed in the family Gephyrostegidae with Bruktererpeton, and several studies indicate it is only distantly related to amniotes, more distant than diadectomorphs, lepospondyls, and seymouriamorphs. The type species is Gephyrostegus bohemicus.
