The series begins when the destruction of Unicron creates a massive black hole threatening Cybertron. The Autobots, led by Optimus Prime, are approached by the ancient Transformer Vector Prime, who reveals the existence of the Cyber Planet Keys—artifacts that can stop the black hole. The Decepticons, under Megatron, steal the map to the keys, and both factions relocate to Earth to begin the search. On Earth, the Autobots befriend three human children—Coby, Bud, and Lori—who help them locate the Omega Lock, the device that focuses the keys' power.

Transformers: Cybertron is significant as the final series in Hasbro's intended trilogy, though the Japanese production diverged by scripting it as an independent story. The English dub partially modified the series to establish links to Armada and Energon, including dialogue changes and new animation. It was the last Transformers anime produced in Japan until Transformers Go! in 2013. The series introduced the Cyber Planet Keys as central plot devices, each tied to a different world—Velocitron, Animatros, Earth, and Gigantion—and featured the transformation of Cybertron into the body of the god Primus. Production & Creative Vision

The film's genesis traces back to a writers' room that Paramount assembled in the spring of 2015, shortly after the release of the live-action entry Age of Extinction. Akiva Goldsman was tasked with convening the room, and by May of that year Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari had signed on. Their pitch—an animated prequel set on the home world of Cybertron—became the project's foundation. The picture was formally announced in August 2017, and Josh Cooley was brought aboard to direct by April 2020. Eric Pearson joined the writing team alongside Barrer and Ferrari. Industrial Light & Magic supplied animation services, and the visual language leaned heavily on the Generation 1 toy aesthetic blended with Art Deco styling. Brian Tyler composed the orchestral score. The result is a 2024 American animated science fiction action film rooted in Hasbro's long-running Transformers franchise.

Narrative & World-Building

The story is set on Cybertron, a planet shaped from the body of the deity Primus and inhabited by sentient robots that draw power from a substance called Energon. Society is rigidly stratified by possession of a transformation cog, which grants the ability to shapeshift into vehicles. In the underground city of Iacon, cogless miner Orion Pax and his closest friend D-16 discover a distress signal from the ancient Prime Alpha Trion, revealing that their ruler Sentinel Prime is an impostor who murdered the true Primes and has been siphoning Energon to alien overlords known as the Quintessons. The narrative charts how Orion's idealism and D-16's escalating aggression drive them onto opposing paths. D-16 ultimately seizes Megatronus Prime's cog, renames himself Megatron, and founds the Decepticons, while Primus and the spirits of the fallen Primes revive Orion as Optimus Prime, bestowing the Matrix of Leadership and the title of Autobot leader.

Voice Ensemble & Character Design

The picture features a high-profile voice cast anchored by Chris Hemsworth as Orion Pax and Optimus Prime, who transforms into a red and blue semi-truck, and Brian Tyree Henry as D-16 and Megatron, a black and gray tank. Scarlett Johansson voices Elita-1, a mining supervisor demoted to waste management who becomes a pink-purple and white three-wheeled motorcycle, while Keegan-Michael Key brings levity to B-127, a talkative garbage sorter who shifts into a yellow car. Steve Buscemi lends his voice to Starscream, the High Guard leader who transforms into a jet, and Laurence Fishburne portrays Alpha Trion, an ancient Prime who takes the form of a lion bearing a unicorn-horn. Jon Hamm voices the antagonistic Sentinel Prime, and Vanessa Liguori voices Airachnid, his spider-themed consigliere. Critics singled out the ensemble's vocal performances as one of the film's standout strengths.

Reception & Box Office

Transformers One had its world premiere in Sydney, Australia, on September 11, 2024, before arriving in U.S. theaters on September 20 under the Paramount Pictures banner. Critical response was largely positive, with reviewers highlighting the storytelling, animation quality, voice work, action choreography, Brian Tyler's score, and the film's comedic timing as particular strengths. Commercially, however, the picture fell short of expectations, collecting roughly $129 million worldwide against a reported production budget in the range of $75 million to $147 million. Despite the box office shortfall, the film is frequently discussed as a meaningful return to the franchise's character-driven roots, with its Generation 1-inspired design language and origin-story focus distinguishing it sharply from the live-action entries that preceded it in the series.
