At over 9,289 kilometers (5,772 miles) in length, it holds the record as the world’s longest railway line, stretching from Moscow in the west to Vladivostok in the east.

Construction was overseen by government ministers chosen by Tsar Alexander III and his son Nicholas II, taking place between 1891 and 1916 under the Russian Empire. **Route**

The railway is most commonly associated with the main transcontinental line that runs through numerous cities in both the European and Asian parts of Russia. Covering 9,289 kilometers (5,772 miles) from Moscow to Vladivostok, it crosses eight time zones. The journey takes about eight days, making it the third-longest continuous rail service in the world, behind the Moscow–Pyongyang route (10,267 kilometers or 6,380 miles) and the former Kyiv–Vladivostok service (11,085 kilometers or 6,888 miles), both of which follow the Trans-Siberian for much of their distance.

The main route starts at Moscow’s Yaroslavsky Vokzal station and passes through Yaroslavl or Chelyabinsk, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Ulan-Ude, Chita, and Khabarovsk before reaching Vladivostok via southern Siberia. A second major route is the Trans-Manchurian, which follows the Trans-Siberian east of Chita as far as Tarskaya—a stop about 12 kilometers (7 miles) east of Karymskoye in Chita Oblast, roughly 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) east of Lake Baikal. From Tarskaya, it heads southeast through the Harbin–Manzhouli and Harbin–Suifenhe railways in China’s northeastern provinces (where a connection to Beijing is used by one of the Moscow–Beijing trains), rejoining the main line at Ussuriysk just north of Vladivostok.

The third primary route is the Trans-Mongolian Railway, which runs alongside the Trans-Siberian as far as Ulan-Ude on Lake Baikal’s eastern shore. From there, it turns south to Ulaanbaatar and then continues southeast to Beijing. In 1991, a fourth, more northern route was finally completed after more than fifty years of intermittent work. Called the Baikal–Amur Mainline (BAM), it branches off the Trans-Siberian at Taishet, several hundred miles west of Lake Baikal, passes the lake at its northernmost point, crosses the Amur River at Komsomolsk-na-Amure (north of Khabarovsk), and ends at the Tatar Strait in Sovetskaya Gavan.

**Demand and design**

In the late 1800s, Siberia’s development was held back by poor transportation links within the region and with the rest of Russia. Aside from the Great Siberian Route, roads suitable for wheeled vehicles were scarce. For about five months each year, rivers served as the main travel routes. During winter, cargo and passengers moved by horse-drawn sledges over frozen rivers and winter roads.

The first steamboat on the Ob River, Nikita Myasnikov’s *Osnova*, launched in 1844. Early progress was slow, and it was not until 1857 that steamboat shipping began to develop significantly on the Ob system. Steamboats started operating on the Yenisei in 1863, and on the Lena and Amur rivers in the 1870s. While western Siberia’s flat terrain had good river networks, the major river systems of eastern Siberia—the Ob–Irtysh–Tobol–Chulym—posed challenges. The Yenisei, the upper Angara River below Bratsk (which was difficult to navigate due to rapids), and the Lena were mostly navigable only north–south, making east–west travel hard. An attempt to improve the situation with the Ob–Yenisei Canal was not very successful. These difficulties created a clear need for a railway.

The first railway plans for Siberia emerged after the Saint Petersburg–Moscow Railway was finished in 1851. One early proposal was the Irkutsk–Chita project, suggested by American entrepreneur Perry Collins and backed by Transport Minister Constantine Possiet, with the goal of linking Moscow to the Amur River and, eventually, the Pacific Ocean. Siberia’s governor, Nikolay Muravyov-Amursky, wanted to push Russian settlement of the Far East, but his plans were impractical because colonists had to import grain and food from China and Korea. It was Muravyov who initiated surveys for a railway in the Khabarovsk region.

Before 1880, the central government largely ignored these projects due to weak Siberian enterprises, an inefficient bureaucracy, and financial risks. By 1880, many applications for railways to connect Siberia with the Pacific had been rejected or were pending, but none linked Siberia to eastern Russia. This worried the government and made connecting Siberia with central Russia a priority. The design process took ten years. Besides the route that was eventually built, other proposals were considered:

- A southern route through Kazakhstan, Barnaul, Abakan, and Mongolia. - A northern route via Tyumen, Tobolsk, Tomsk, Yeniseysk, and the modern Baikal–Amur Mainline, or even through Yakutsk.

The line was divided into seven sections, most or all of which were built at the same time.
