The Flying Scotsman is a steam locomotive of the LNER Class A3 4-6-2 "Pacific" type, constructed in 1923 at Doncaster Works for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) under the design of Nigel Gresley. It served as a flagship engine for the LNER, appearing at the British Empire Exhibition on two occasions and pulling the first non-stop Flying Scotsman service in 1928. On 30 November 1934, it became the first steam locomotive to achieve an officially authenticated speed of 100 miles per hour (161 km/h). After covering 2.08 million miles (3.35 million kilometres), it was retired from British Railways in 1963. In preservation, it gained widespread fame under owners Alan Pegler, William McAlpine, Tony Marchington, and, from 2004, the National Railway Museum. While touring Australia on 8 August 1989, it set a record for the longest non-stop run by a steam locomotive at 422 miles (679 km). The locomotive was ordered in July 1922 by the Great Northern Railway (GNR) as part of a batch of ten Class A1 4-6-2 "Pacific" engines built at Doncaster Works. Designed by Nigel Gresley, these A1s were intended for mainline and express passenger duties. After the GNR was absorbed into the LNER in 1923, the design became standard. Flying Scotsman cost £7,944 to build and was the first engine delivered to the newly formed LNER, entering service on 24 February 1923 with the GNR number 1472, as the LNER had not yet settled on a numbering system. In February 1924, it was named after the LNER's Flying Scotsman express service and renumbered 4472.

In 1928, the LNER introduced a non-stop Flying Scotsman service, and 4472 was one of five A1s chosen for the role. It hauled the inaugural train on 1 May, covering 392 miles (631 km) in 8 hours and 3 minutes. This non-stop operation required an upgraded tender with extra coal capacity and a corridor connection for crew changes while moving; water was taken from troughs along the route. The locomotive used this corridor tender until October 1936, then reverted to the original type. From 1938 until its withdrawal in 1963, it was paired with a streamlined non-corridor tender.

On 30 November 1934, while hauling a light test train between Leeds and London, Flying Scotsman became the first steam locomotive to reach an officially authenticated speed of 100 mph (161 km/h). The LNER, keen on publicity, highlighted this achievement, though the Great Western Railway's 3440 City of Truro had reportedly reached the same speed in 1904 without official confirmation. After the introduction of Gresley's streamlined Class A4s in 1935, Flying Scotsman was reassigned to lesser duties but continued mainline passenger work. During World War II, it was painted black in 1943. In 1946, it was renumbered twice under Edward Thompson's scheme: first to 502, then to 103. Gresley had begun modifying A1s into the improved Class A3 in 1928, and the remaining unmodified A1s, including Flying Scotsman, were reclassified as A10 in 1945. In late 1946, no. 103 was rebuilt as an A3, returning to service on 4 January 1947 with its original Apple Green livery. This rebuild replaced its old 180 psi boiler with a 225 psi version featuring a long "banjo" dome, and it received more efficient valves and cylinders.

Following nationalisation on 1 January 1948, Flying Scotsman was briefly renumbered E103 before being assigned 60103 that December. It wore BR Express Blue from 1949 to 1952, then BR Green. On 4 June 1950, it was based at Leicester Central on the Great Central Main Line, running services to and from London Marylebone, London St Pancras, Leicester, Sheffield, and Manchester. It returned to the East Coast Main Line in 1953, initially at Grantham, then at London King's Cross the following year. In December 1958, a double Kylchap chimney was fitted to improve performance and economy, but it caused soft exhaust and smoke drift that obscured the driver's forward vision. German-type smoke deflectors were added at the end of 1961 to remedy this. The Gresley A3 Preservation Society failed to raise the £3,000 needed to buy the locomotive from British Railways, but businessman Alan Pegler, who had seen it as a boy at the British Empire Exhibition and received £70,000 in 1961, stepped in to purchase it.
