Lore & Background
The game begins one month after the original Trails of Cold Steel and concurrently with the final chapter of Trails to Azure. Rean Schwarzer awakens from a month-long coma after being evacuated from Trista by Valimar. With the help of bracer Toval Randonneur, he reaches his hometown of Ymir but soon finds himself and his loved ones caught in the crossfire of a civil war. His opponents include the Noble Alliance, backed by the Imperial Liberation Front, and Ouroboros, a secretive crime syndicate. Rean resolves to find his scattered classmates from Thors Military Academy, end the civil war, and save those he cares about.
After gathering the students and resolving conflicts across eastern Erebonia, Rean leads them in liberating Thors from the Noble Alliance. They discover parallels between the modern war and the War of the Lions, a civil war 250 years earlier ended by Dreichels the Lionheart, former Awakener of Valimar. Class VII attacks the capital Heimdallr to stop the Noble Alliance, succeeding at the cost of Crow Armbrust's life. Chancellor Osborne, believed assassinated, arrives to seize control, revealing his intent to take over Ouroboros's 'Phantasmal Blaze Plan', annex Crossbell State, and that he is Rean's biological father. After the war, the Noble Faction's power diminishes while the Chancellor's expands. Before the school year ends, all Class VII members except Rean choose to graduate early.
