Hicham El Guerrouj
Moroccan middle-distance runner and world record holder in the 1500 metres.
Hicham El Guerrouj (born 14 September 1974) is a retired Moroccan middle-distance runner. He currently holds the world record in the 1500 metres, and previously held the world records in the 2000 metres and the mile. At the 2004 Summer Olympics, he became the first man since Paavo Nurmi to win gold in both the 1500 m and 5000 m at a single Games.
Widely considered one of the greatest middle-distance runners ever, he still owns several of the fastest 1500 m and mile times in history. His mile world record of 3:43.13 stood for 24 years, from 1999 until it was broken in 2023. He and Jakob Ingebrigtsen are among the few men to have run faster than 3:27 for the 1500 m and 3:44 for the mile. El Guerrouj is also one of only two men to break 3:27 in the 1500 m more than once, doing so five times.
He won four straight world titles in the 1500 m, taking gold at the 1997, 1999, 2001, and 2003 World Athletics Championships. He was named World Athlete of the Year three times and was inducted into the IAAF Hall of Fame in November 2014.
Born in Berkane to a farming family, El Guerrouj first played soccer and basketball. At age 13, a local coach noticed his talent and steered him toward athletics. He has said that growing up in the city near a sports stadium let him watch many competitions, which fueled his love of running.
His first international success came at 18, when he placed third in the 5000 m at the 1992 Junior World Championships in Seoul, behind Haile Gebrselassie and Ismael Kirui. A year later, he was the second man on Morocco’s team at the World Junior Cross Country Championships. In 1994, he was part of the Moroccan team that won the IAAF World Road Relay Championships in world record time.
He rose to prominence in the mid-1990s with near-record times in the 1500 m and mile. At age 20, he finished second in the 1500 m to then world record holder Noureddine Morceli at the 1995 World Championships in Gothenburg. In 1996, after setting a personal best of 3:29.59 in Stockholm, he was considered a favorite for Olympic gold.
At his first Olympics in Atlanta in 1996, El Guerrouj fell with 400 m to go in the 1500 m final while moving to challenge for the lead, finishing last in 12th place. He had been expected to challenge Morceli. One month later, at the Grand Prix final in Milan, he became the first runner to beat Morceli over 1500 m in four years. O
