Volvo's compact executive sedan produced across three generations since 2000.
The Volvo S60 is a compact executive car that Volvo Cars has been making since 2000, replacing the Volvo S70. There have been three generations. The first came out in 2000, built on the P2 platform, and a high-performance version called the S60 R arrived in 2002. The second generation started in 2010. The third generation launched in 2018, using Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture platform, and was the first Volvo built in the United States, at the Ridgeville, South Carolina plant. For a short time in early 2019, after production in China paused, the U.S. plant was the only source of the S60 sedan worldwide. Production for North America and Europe ended in 2024, but China kept making the car for its own market and some Asia-Pacific countries.
The first-generation S60 shared the P2 platform with other Volvos like the S80, V70, XC70, and XC90. Its design took cues from the Volvo ECC concept and the S80. It launched as a sporty sedan aimed at rivals like the BMW 3 Series (E46), Mercedes-Benz C-Class (W203), and Alfa Romeo 156. Unlike those competitors, the S60 stayed in production for nine years with several facelifts. Its look was softer and more rounded than older Volvos, with a cab-forward shape and a pronounced beltline shelf, giving it a low drag coefficient. Safety features included front and rear crumple zones, dual-threshold airbags, a collapsible steering column, the Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) with side and curtain airbags, anti-submarine seats, five padded head restraints with Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), and automatic seatbelt pretensioners with height-adjustable front belts.
In 2004, PremAir™ became standard, using the radiator surface to convert up to 75 percent of ground-level ozone into oxygen. The Interior Air Quality System monitored pollutants and could recirculate cabin air. Upholstery came in taupe, light sand, or graphite with indigo inserts, and leather was tanned with natural plant materials. The S60’s sheet metal and other metals were 85 percent recyclable. Options included dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, three-position driver’s seat memory, anti-smash laminated side windows, and wheel choices of one 15-inch, three 16-inch, and two 17-inch aluminum alloys.
