Lada 110

Russian compact car produced from 1995 to 2009.

The Lada 110, also designated the VAZ-2110, was a compact car produced by AvtoVAZ between 1995 and 2009. Two closely related models branched off from it: the Lada 111 estate and the Lada 112 hatchback. This car found strong success within Russia and continues to be a common choice for taxi drivers in the Southern Federal District, valued for its balance of cost and performance.

Development began with a prototype called the 300 series in 1987. Engineers from AvtoVAZ and Porsche worked together in Zuffenhausen, Germany, to refine its aerodynamics. The first images of the car appeared in the magazine *Za Rulem* in November 1990, and it was shown at the AvtoVAZ plant in Tolyatti the following year. Serial production was planned for 1992, but an economic crisis delayed it until June 27, 1995. The initial engine was a 1.6-liter unit producing about 90 hp, first offered with 8 valves and later with 16 valves. The car weighed roughly 1050 kg and came with electric windows, a trip computer, power steering, and galvanized body panels. Fuel-injected versions had an electronic engine management system. In early 2006, the taillights and dashboard were updated.

In 2007, the entire Lada 110 family received a restyle and modernization, relaunching as the Lada Priora.

Three trim levels were available: Standard, Normal, and Luxe. Standard included a clock, heated rear window, power door and trunk locks, an onboard control system, an immobilizer, body-color bumpers, tweed upholstery, and front head restraints. Normal added power windows, anti-dazzle exterior mirrors, velour upholstery, and rear head restraints. Luxe brought heated front seats, a trip computer, fog lights, heated and electric outside mirrors, velvet upholstery, a trunk spoiler with an integrated brake light, and tinted windows.

The model, especially the five-door Lada 112 hatchback, became a frequent subject for both amateur and professional styling. Several Tolyatti-based companies produced body kits. APAL made parts for the Lada BIS 110 and 111, as did Tornado, Katran, and Grossmeyster. AKS (Kurage), Autostyle (Tomcat), and Motorica worked on the Lada 110M, which appeared in AvtoVAZ’s official catalogue as a restyled version. Pit-Stop offered the Grand Rally and Rally Sport, while Arsenal-Auto built the Sprint.

Lore & Background

The prototype of the Lada 110, known as the 300 series, was created in 1987 and optimized for aerodynamics in Zuffenhausen, Germany, in cooperation between AvtoVAZ and Porsche engineers. First photos were published in the magazine Za Rulem in November 1990, and the car was demonstrated at the AvtoVAZ Tolyatti factory in 1991. Serial production was planned for 1992 but an economic crisis stalled the project; the first cars rolled off the assembly line on June 27, 1995. Production began with 8-valve engines; a 16-valve engine was offered later. The car featured electric windows, trip computer, power steering, and galvanized body panels. Fuel-injected models were equipped with an electronic engine management system. In early 2006, new taillights and a new dashboard were introduced. In 2007, the Lada 110 family was restyled and modernised, and relaunched as the Lada Priora.

Reader's Guide

The Lada 110 was a significant model for AvtoVAZ, representing a modernized design developed with Porsche engineering input. Its three trim levels—Standard, Normal, and Luxe—offered a range of features from basic to more luxurious, including heated front seats, trip computer, and fog lights. The model became a favorite target for styling, both artisanal and professional, especially the five-door hatchback Lada 112. Numerous companies from Tolyatti designed body kits and special versions, including the APAL BIS, Tornado, Katran, Grossmeyster, and the Motorica VAZ-21106 with a 135 PS Opel engine. Super-Avto developed a 1.8-liter version and an elongated sedan, the VAZ-21108 Premier. The four-wheel drive Tarzan-2 was built on the Lada 111 station wagon basis. The Lada 110 was entered in the 2008 World Touring Car Championship season by Russian Bears Motorsport, and Team LADA Sport used three 110s in the 2009 season before replacing them with the newer Priora. Production continued outside Russia by Bogdan in Ukraine until 2014 and in Egypt until 2015.

Final Days & the Vesta Successor

The Priora's twilight began in 2014 when AvtoVAZ unveiled the Lada Vesta at the Moscow International Automobile Salon, signalling a full generational shift. Vesta production commenced in September 2015, and by 2016 the Priora had been pulled from all foreign markets, becoming a Russia-only product even though it continued rolling off the Tolyatti line. On May 22, 2018, AvtoVAZ confirmed that sedan production would end that July. The final car was photographed between July 11 and 13, draped in coloured balloons and bearing a poster reading "Последний!" — Russian for "Last!" — a bittersweet farewell captured on July 16 and shared online. Those last units were assembled from body shells that had already been welded earlier, a practical measure to clear remaining stock. The following day, July 17, AvtoVAZ issued an official statement formally confirming the end of Priora production. In total, the model had spent over a decade as a cornerstone of the Russian compact-car segment before the Vesta took its place.
