BTC-T Vauxhall Astra Sport Hatch
BTC-Touring class racer built for Vauxhall's 2005 BTCC works program.
The BTC-T Vauxhall Astra Sport Hatch was a touring car built for the 2005 British Touring Car Championship season. Triple 8 Race Engineering, which operated Vauxhall’s factory program, constructed the car. It took over from the BTC-T Vauxhall Astra Coupe, which VX Racing had campaigned for four years. An experimental BTC-T Vectra had been built in 2003, but its weight stopped that project from continuing.
Replacing the successful Coupe proved difficult. The Astra Sport Hatch won only ten of the sixty races it entered as a works car, driven by Yvan Muller, Colin Turkington, and Fabrizio Giovanardi. The rise of the BTC-T Honda Integra Type R became too much for Vauxhall, even though the Astra scored a debut victory and gave Vauxhall its 100th BTCC win at Knockhill in 2006. Despite Matt Neal’s Integra dominating, the Astra did secure the 2005 Manufacturers’ Championship for Vauxhall, as Team Dynamics did not compete in that title.
After Vauxhall replaced the car with a Super 2000-spec Vectra, Turkish driver Erkut Kizilirmak bought three of the four chassis. He ran them for his Arkas Racing team in the 2007 BTCC, with occasional outings in the Turkish Touring Car Championship. In 2008, Kizilirmak expanded to a two-car BTCC effort, joined by Martyn Bell.
The chassis histories are as follows: CH12 was used by Yvan Muller for the first three rounds of 2005 before becoming a two-seater, then saw Erkut Kizilirmak drive it in late 2006, and remained a two-seater from 2007 onward. CH14 was driven by Colin Turkington for the first twelve rounds of 2005 and was unused after that. CH15 was driven by Gavin Smith in 2005 and 2006, then by Erkut Kizilirmak in the Turkish championship in 2007, and by Kizilirmak again for rounds 10–30 of 2008. CH16 was driven by Yvan Muller from round 4 to the end of 2005, by Fabrizio Giovanardi in 2006, and by Erkut Kizilirmak for the first nine rounds of 2007 and 2008 before being written off at Donington Park. CH17 was driven by Colin Turkington from round 13 to the end of 2005, by Tom Chilton in 2006 and 2007, and by Martyn Bell in 2008.

Lore & Background
The car was developed to replace the BTC-T Vauxhall Astra Coupe, which had been campaigned for four years. An earlier attempt to build a BTC-T spec Vectra in 2003 was abandoned due to the car's weight. The Astra Sport Hatch debuted successfully, winning its first race and later securing Vauxhall's 100th BTCC win at Knockhill in 2006. However, the emergence of the BTC-T Honda Integra Type R proved a significant challenge, and the car won only ten of its sixty races as a works entry. Despite the dominance of Matt Neal's Integra, the Astra Sport Hatch delivered the 2005 Manufacturer's championship to Vauxhall, as Team Dynamics were not competing in that championship.
After the car was replaced by the Super 2000-spec Vectra, Turkish driver Erkut Kizilirmak purchased three of the four chassis for his Arkas Racing team, using them in the BTCC for 2007 with occasional races in the Turkish Touring Car Championship. In 2008, the BTCC effort expanded to a two-car team, with Martyn Bell joining Kizilirmak. The chassis history shows varied use: CH12 served as a two-seater and was used by Yvan Muller and Erkut Kizilirmak; CH14 was used by Colin Turkington in 2005 and then unused; CH15 was driven by Gavin Smith and later by Kizilirmak in the Turkish championship and BTCC; CH16 was used by Muller, Fabrizio Giovanardi, and Kizilirmak before being written off at Donington Park; and CH17 was used by Turkington, Tom Chilton, and Martyn Bell.
Reader's Guide
The BTC-T Vauxhall Astra Sport Hatch represents a transitional period in Vauxhall's BTCC works program, bridging the successful Astra Coupe era and the later Super 2000 Vectra. Its significance lies in its role as the car that secured Vauxhall's 2005 Manufacturer's championship, despite facing stiff competition from the BTC-T Honda Integra Type R. The car's limited success—ten wins from sixty races—reflects the difficulty of replacing a highly successful predecessor. Its legacy is further shaped by its later career in privateer hands, particularly through Erkut Kizilirmak's Arkas Racing team, which kept the chassis active in the BTCC and Turkish Touring Car Championship. The chassis history reveals a mix of works and privateer use, with some chassis converted to two-seaters and one written off. The car's debut victory and the milestone of Vauxhall's 100th BTCC win at Knockhill in 2006 are notable achievements, yet the overall record underscores the challenge posed by the Integra's dominance. The Astra Sport Hatch ultimately served as a stepping stone to the Super 2000 regulations, marking the end of Vauxhall's BTC-T era.
