Steve Archibald

Steven Archibald, born 27 September 1956, is a Scottish former footballer and manager. He played up front for Aberdeen, Tottenham Hotspur, and Barcelona, among other clubs in Scotland, England, Spain, and Ireland. With Aberdeen he won the Scottish league in 1980; at Tottenham he lifted two FA Cups and a UEFA Cup; and at Barcelona he claimed the Spanish league in 1985. Archibald earned 27 caps for Scotland and was selected for the 1982 and 1986 World Cups.

In 2009 he entered the Scottish Football Hall of Fame. He later managed East Fife and Airdrieonians. Archibald grew up in Rutherglen, near Glasgow, and trained as a car mechanic while playing for local sides Croftfoot United and Fernhill Athletic. He was spotted by Clyde in 1974.

Originally a midfielder at Clyde, he was converted to striker after Billy McNeill paid £20,000 to take him to Aberdeen in January 1978, where he formed a strong partnership with Joe Harper. After winning the Scottish Premier Division in 1980, he moved to Tottenham for £800,000. In his first season he was the First Division’s top scorer and won the FA Cup. He won a second FA Cup in 1982 and the UEFA Cup in 1984, scoring his penalty in the shootout win over Anderlecht.

He also scored in the 1982 League Cup final defeat to Liverpool. In 189 appearances for Spurs from 1980 to 1984, he scored 77 goals, linking well with Garth Crooks and Mark Falco. In 1984 he joined Barcelona for £1,150,000. In his first season he helped the club win La Liga for the first time in 11 years.

The following year Barcelona reached the European Cup final but lost on penalties to Steaua Bucharest. Archibald was popular at the Camp Nou until foreign player limits pushed him out in favour of Gary Lineker and Mark Hughes. He was loaned to Blackburn Rovers before returning to Scotland with Hibernian in 1988. In his first season at Hibs he scored 16 goals, including the winner in a 2–1 away victory over Hearts in November 1988—Hibs’ first away win against their city rivals in over a decade.

He left Hibs in 1990 after a falling-out with manager Alex Miller, then had a short spell with Espanyol in Spain’s second division. He later joined St Mirren and helped bring former Barcelona teammate Víctor Muñoz to the club. His later career included brief stints at several clubs in Scotland, England, and Ireland, including a return to Clyde. Archibald played for Scotland at the 1982 and 1986 World Cups.

He was inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame on 15 November 2009. As a manager, Archibald led East Fife to promotion to the First Division and brought Trinidad and Tobago internationals Arnold Dwarika and Craig Demmin to the club. He was sacked in 1996 and retired to Spain, working as a football agent. In 2000 he attempted to buy financially troubled Airdrieonians.

Granted preferred bidder status, he installed himself as manager and brought in Spanish and other foreign players. The team won the 2000–01 Scottish Challenge Cup. Though fans were impressed, Archibald failed to complete the purchase, and he and the foreign players left in March 2001. The club narrowly avoided relegation but were expelled from the Scottish Cup for failing to fulfil a fixture.

Airdrieonians went out of business on 1 May 2002; a new club, Airdrie United, took Clydebank’s place in the Scottish Football League.
