Torino's greatest period was the Grande Torino era of the 1940s, when the team won five consecutive Serie A titles and formed the backbone of the Italy national team. The era ended tragically on 4 May 1949 when the team's plane crashed at Superga, killing all aboard. The club's first scudetto came in 1927–28 after a previous title was revoked due to the Allemandi Case. Torino's seventh and most recent Serie A title was won in 1975–76, 27 years after the Superga tragedy.
