Lore & Background

Castigliano's career moved through Pro Vercelli, Spezia, and Biellese before he reached Torino, where he became part of the legendary Grande Torino side. That team dominated Italian football, winning three consecutive Serie A titles: 1946–47, 1947–48, and 1948–49 (the 1944–45 season was not officially held due to World War II). Castigliano played as a midfielder, contributing to a squad that was nearly unbeatable in those years. On 4 May 1949, the entire team was killed when their plane crashed into the Superga hill, just outside Turin. Castigliano was 28 years old. His international career saw him earn seven caps for Italy between 1945 and 1949, scoring one goal. The Superga disaster remains the defining tragedy of Torino's history, wiping out the club's greatest generation in an instant.

Reader's Guide

The Grande Torino era (1944–1949) is the most celebrated period in Torino FC history, and Castigliano was a key part of it. The team won four Serie A titles in a row, a feat unmatched in Italian football at the time. The squad's dominance was so complete that they provided the backbone of the Italian national team: Castigliano himself earned seven caps between 1945 and 1949, scoring once. The Superga air disaster on 4 May 1949 ended it all. For Torino supporters, the names of those 18 players — including Castigliano — are recited every year on the anniversary. The tragedy is not just a loss of players; it is the moment the club's golden age was cut short.
