Steel Beam Incident

The night Kaneki became a half-ghoul.

The Steel Beam Incident is the event that sets Tokyo Ghoul in motion, in early October in the 20th Ward, told in chapter 1 of the manga and episode 1 of the anime. After their date, Rize Kamishiro led Ken Kaneki into an isolated alley near a construction site, revealed herself as a ghoul and attacked him, but steel beams fell and crushed her.

Background

Both were taken to Kanou General Hospital, where Dr. Akihiro Kanou reported the girl dead and transplanted Rize's kakuhou into the critically injured Kaneki, turning him into a one-eyed ghoul; the unauthorised transplant drew heavy criticism in the media. Itori hinted that someone had been seen at the site and that Rize had been murdered, which set Kaneki searching for the truth, and he eventually learned that Rize had survived and was being used by Kanou as a donor for further experiments. During the Owl Suppression Operation he remembered seeing the Clown Souta at the scene; four years later Souta told him that his real target had been Rize, whom he wanted to hand to Kanou, and that Kaneki's part was a coincidence.
