Anteiku is a coffee shop operated by ghouls in Tokyo's 20th Ward. The establishment serves as a safe haven where ghouls can gather and support one another. After Ken Kaneki is transformed into a half-ghoul following a surgery that transferred some of Rize Kamishiro's organs into his body, the ghouls who run Anteiku take him in. They teach him to deal with his new life as a half-ghoul, including the necessity of consuming human flesh to survive. The café provides a setting where Kaneki struggles to fit into ghoul society while keeping his identity hidden from his human companions, especially his best friend Hideyoshi Nagachika.
