The City

A rain-drenched medieval city where every shadow hides a blade and every lock hides a secret.

The City is the fictional setting of the Thief video game series. It is a sprawling, rain-slicked urban environment of cobblestone streets, gothic cathedrals, noble estates, working-class workshops, and a vast sewer network beneath the streets. The city is never given a proper name in any of the games; it is simply "the city," a place of sharp class divisions where a corrupt ruling elite hoards wealth and power while commoners scrape by in the lower districts.

Lore & Background

The City is defined by its hierarchy. At the top sits the King and his court in the Royal Palace, surrounded by nobles, priests, and mages who control the flow of wealth, knowledge, and magic. Below them, the working districts—the Forge, the Tannery, the Brewery, the Docks—churn out the goods that keep the upper city comfortable. The common folk in the Market and the lower alleys have little power and less protection. The Guild of Thieves occupies a liminal space: tolerated by the authorities as long as they do not steal from the nobility directly, yet despised by the very people they sometimes rob. Garrett, the player's avatar, is the Guild's most skilled operative, a figure of near-legendary reputation who moves through the city's architecture like water through stone.

Reader's Guide

The City is the entire playable environment across the Thief series. Every mission takes place within its districts, and the player's understanding of the city's layout, guard routines, and NPC schedules is the core of the gameplay loop. The city is divided into vertical and horizontal zones. The upper districts—Cathedral, Royal Palace, Library, Temple—feature ornate interiors with high ceilings, narrow staircases, and multiple locked rooms.

The middle districts—Market, Forge, Tannery, Brewery—are more open, with workshops, storage areas, and civilian foot traffic. The lower districts and the Docks are grittier, with smugglers, criminals, and more aggressive guards. Beneath everything runs the sewer network, a sprawling underground web that connects most major locations and serves as Garrett's primary traversal route. Each district contains a mix of objectives: vaults to crack, items to steal, secrets to uncover, and optional challenges like killing guards silently or completing a mission without being detected.

The city's design rewards patience and spatial awareness. Learning the patrol routes, the sight lines, and the noise propagation of each area is as important as any mechanical skill. The city is not a series of isolated levels; it is a single, interconnected world where every alley, rooftop, and sewer grate is a potential path.
