The Surges represent the raw magical potential left behind by the Shattering. In ancient times, humanity could access these powers more freely, but they became restricted to those who formed Nahel bonds with spren and swore specific Oaths. Each Order of the Knights Radiant is defined by a unique pair of Surges, creating distinct combat styles and capabilities. The magic is deeply tied to the spiritual realm; without the intent and connection provided by a spren bond, Stormlight cannot be channeled into these effects. The Fused, however, utilize these powers through their own nature as Vessels, often ignoring the traditional Oaths required by humans. This divergence has caused significant conflict throughout Roshar's history. Scholars and historians study the Surges to understand the past Desolations. Each power reflects a fundamental aspect of existence, from gravity and light to friction and healing, suggesting that magic on this world is an extension of physical laws rather than separate from them.

She raised a hand, and the heavy stone beneath her feet obeyed, lifting into the air as if weightless. It was not trickery; it was the raw authority of the Surges made manifest through blood and light.

Reader's Guide

The Surges function through a Nahel bond between a human and a spren, channeling Stormlight to manipulate reality around the user. Each individual typically accesses two specific powers based on their assigned Order of Radiant. Fuel consumption is directly tied to intensity; stronger effects drain light much faster than subtle adjustments. Visual manifestations vary wildly depending on the specific power: some create brilliant light, others alter gravity or friction instantly. Crucially, access requires strong intent and often adherence to spiritual Ideals, though the Fused bypass Oaths through different means rooted in their own nature. Without Stormlight, a Surge user loses their enhanced abilities, reverting to normal human limits within moments of exertion. Some Surges are internal, like Healing via Progression, while others affect external objects or movement.
