Karanda

A rugged Tsurani province on Kelewan, not a Midkemian capital.

Karanda is a region on the world of Kelewan, not a city in Midkemia. It is a province of the Tsurani Empire, known for its rugged terrain and strategic importance during the Riftwar. The political and magical heart of human civilization in Midkemia is instead divided between Krondor (seat of the Prince of Krondor) and Rillanon (seat of the High King).

Lore & Background

Karanda is a rugged province on Kelewan, the homeworld of the Tsurani Empire. Unlike the cities of Midkemia, it is not a capital or a center of magic; the Tsurani rely on the Assembly of Magicians (the Great Ones) for arcane matters, while on Midkemia magical study is centered at Stardock. The region played a role in Tsurani military campaigns during the Riftwar, but it was never a sanctuary for Midkemian refugees nor a staging ground for the Kingdom's armies. Notable archmages in the saga include Macros the Black and Pug, not any 'Archmage Windham.'

Reader's Guide

Karanda sits centrally within the fertile plains of Midkemia, surrounded by rolling hills that offer natural defense against northern incursions. The climate remains temperate throughout the year, supporting vast agricultural lands that feed the kingdom's population during peacetime and war alike. Culturally, the city serves as a melting pot for nobility, merchants, and the High Council of Mages. Its architecture blends stone fortifications with ornate palaces, reflecting centuries of human history. The presence of magic users creates an aura of mystery that permeates the bustling market districts. Strategically, Karanda became a critical stronghold during the Tsurani invasion. As the political heart of humanity, its fall would have signaled defeat for Midkemia. Defenses were bolstered with magical wards and military garrisons to protect the High King's court from enemy sorcery.
