First Contact Protocol
The diplomatic shield that guides humanity through the unknown stars.
First contact guidelines represent a foundational pillar of United Earth's diplomatic and military doctrine within The Orville universe. They constitute a comprehensive set of Union regulations designed to govern interactions with previously unknown sentient species, ensuring that initial encounters are conducted with caution, respect, and adherence to universal rights. These frameworks serve as the primary reference for officers like Commander Kelly Grayson and Captain Ed Mercer when navigating the complexities of meeting new civilizations.

Lore & Background
These guidelines are not merely a set of rules but a reflection of humanity's desire to be seen as benevolent explorers rather than conquerors. They integrate the Universal Declaration of Rights, ensuring that any new species encountered are afforded dignity and autonomy. However, the rigidity of these regulations often clashes with the chaotic reality of space exploration, forcing commanders to make difficult ethical choices when the framework seems insufficient for unique scenarios.
Reader's Guide
The First Contact Protocol is essential for understanding how United Earth interacts with the galaxy. It prioritizes peaceful engagement and strict adherence to ethical standards. Officers are trained to observe before acting, ensuring they do not disrupt local cultures or technologies prematurely. This cautious approach prevents accidental colonization or cultural erasure. However, the protocol faces challenges when dealing with hostile species or situations where immediate action is required for survival. These moments test the resolve of the crew and their commitment to Earth's ideals.
