Role Within the Glade Society
Gally emerges as a prominent figure within the Glade society, where boys have established specialized roles to survive inside massive stone walls. Upon Thomas's arrival in the elevator, tensions rise immediately after a physical altercation between the two teenagers. This confrontation triggers Thomas's memory recovery regarding his name. As the group struggles with the ever-changing labyrinth surrounding them, Gally becomes increasingly suspicious of new arrivals disrupting their fragile peace. When Alby is injured by a Griever sting during an exploration mission, leadership dynamics shift significantly. Gally seizes control overnight following the chaos caused by the maze gates remaining open and allowing biomechanical creatures to invade. He insists that Thomas be punished for allegedly disturbing the balance between the Gladers and the dangerous monsters roaming outside their enclosure.
Leadership and Paranoia During Crisis
Following the tragic invasion where many Gladers lost their lives, Gally's suspicion hardens into a desperate strategy for survival. He takes command of the remaining group while others attempt to flee through the maze exit. Believing that peace can only be restored by eliminating the threat posed by Thomas and Teresa, he plans to use them as bait to lure Grievers away from the Glade. This decision highlights his deep-seated fear regarding the experiment they are trapped in. While a faction of boys chooses to free the newcomers and escape together, Gally stays behind with a few loyal followers. His actions demonstrate a willingness to sacrifice individuals for what he perceives as the greater good of their community. The situation escalates when Jeff and several others are killed by the creatures during the escape attempt, validating some of his fears while condemning his methods.
The Infection and Final Confrontation
As the surviving group reaches a laboratory filled with corpses, they discover the truth behind their confinement through a video recording. A scientist named Ava Paige explains that solar flares and a pandemic caused by the Flare virus devastated the planet, necessitating the experiment to find a cure. Gally, having followed the main group despite his earlier decision to stay, arrives at this location severely compromised. He had been stung by a Griever during the pursuit, leaving him delirious and infected with no known cure available in that moment. In his final moments of lucidity, he declares hopelessness, stating they will never be free from WCKD's control. This revelation underscores the tragic nature of their situation, as the Gladers were merely test subjects for an organization that ultimately failed to save them from the virus itself.
Death and Narrative Significance
The confrontation concludes violently within the laboratory setting. Gally attempts to fire a gun at Thomas, driven by his infection and despair. Minho intervenes by spearing him to stop the attack, but not before Gally fatally shoots Chuck. This act ensures that even in death, Gally leaves a mark of tragedy on the group's history. As Thomas mourns the loss of his friend, masked soldiers arrive to escort the survivors away from the scene toward a helicopter. The film ends with the revelation that the scientists were not actually dead and that Phase Two of the experiment is beginning. Gally’s death serves as a grim reminder of the Flare virus's impact on human behavior and loyalty. His arc represents the struggle between maintaining order in chaos versus accepting the dangerous truth of their reality.
