Sting
A blade that shines with Elven light when shadows draw near.
Sting is a legendary Elven blade forged in the First Age, renowned for its unique ability to glow blue when Orcs or other dark creatures are near. Originally wielded by the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins during his quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain, the sword was later passed down to his nephew, Frodo Baggins, becoming an essential tool in the War of the Ring. Though small enough for a Hobbit's hand, its sharpness and Elven craftsmanship allow it to cut through armor that would shatter lesser steel.

Lore & Background
Beyond its diminutive stature lies a terrifying lethality honed in the fires of Gondolin. While it glows with a spectral blue radiance to warn of approaching Orcs and Goblins, Sting's true legend was forged in Mirkwood, where Bilbo used it to slay a massive spider, earning the blade its name. Its Elven steel remains sharp enough to pierce chainmail and cleave through the flesh of giants, most notably when Frodo beheaded the Witch-king's lieutenant at Minas Morgul—a feat no common iron could ever hope to achieve.
Reader's Guide
Sting defies its classification as a mere dagger for Men and Dwarves, serving as a full-fledged sword in the hands of Hobbits. Forged from Elven steel of the First Age, it possesses an edge that shatters against lesser metals yet slices effortlessly through leather and chainmail. Its most critical function is that of a magical sensor: the blade ignites with a soft blue glow only in the presence of Orcs, Goblins, or other servants of Sauron, remaining dark before Trolls or Men who are not under his shadow. The intensity of this luminescence acts as a precise barometer for danger, flaring brighter and hotter as the number and threat level of nearby foes increase.
Did You Know?
- In the ancient city of Gondolin, Sting likely served as a sidearm for an Elf lord, whereas Frodo wielded it as a primary sword due to his smaller stature.
- The blade's blue luminescence is a unique trait of Elven smiths from the First Age; not all magical weapons in Middle-earth possess this ability to detect evil.
