The plot follows Cornelia, who is picked up by Cleary and taken with Sister Harriet to perform an abortion. Cornelia is taken aback by their involvement, especially Harriet’s, whom she considered a trusted friend, but the procedure proceeds as intended. Thackery and Edwards attend a surgery by Dr. Zinberg, who announces a collaboration with Karl Landsteiner on blood transfusion theory. Eager to gain an edge, Thackery hands over all surgeries to Edwards while he researches blood types. His addiction strains his relationship with Elkins as he experiments on a new patient. Gallinger visits Eleanor and is horrified to learn that Dr. Henry Cotton has removed all her teeth as a controversial mental health treatment. Later, Gallinger fights Edwards at the hospital, leading Barrow to suspend him. Edwards learns from Cornelia about the abortion; though he acknowledges its necessity, he ends their affair, leaving her disappointed. Cornelia marries Phillip, but Edwards skips the ceremony, drinks at a bar, starts a fight, and is beaten unconscious. Barrow, pressured by Collier over his debt, is beaten badly. He then approaches Ping Wu, offering money to kill Collier, falsely claiming to represent Thackery. Wu carries out the hit but then takes over Collier’s loans, forcing Barrow to realize his error.
