History

ITV News Anglia began as Anglia News on 9 July 1990, taking over from the long-running magazine programme About Anglia. At launch, it offered two sub-regional editions: one for the East covering Norfolk, Suffolk, and Essex, and another for the West covering Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire, northern Hertfordshire, northern Buckinghamshire (including Milton Keynes), southern Lincolnshire, southern Rutland, and part of southern Leicestershire. The programme was renamed Anglia News Tonight in September 2003, but this was simplified to Anglia Tonight just five months later in February 2004. Both editions were produced from Norwich. By 2008, the bulletins during GMTV and weekends had become pan-regional. From 12 February 2009, all weekday programming was pan-regional, with the final separate 6pm editions airing the night before. In 2012, Becky Jago and Jonathan Wills were the main anchors. The remaining sub-regional elements included a six-minute opt-out during the 6pm programme, full eight-minute late weeknight bulletins, and localised weather forecasts. Because both sub-regions used the same presenter and studio, one opt-out was pre-recorded as live shortly before broadcast. On 14 January 2013, the service was relaunched and renamed ITV News Anglia. Following approved proposals on 23 July 2013 for a more localised Channel 3 news service, separate East and West programmes were reintroduced on 16 September 2013. These half-hour 6pm editions featured at least 20 minutes of local news, alongside separate weekday daytime and weekend bulletins for each sub-region.
