Making and release
In January 2013, co-creator Ryan Murphy hinted that a clue about the third season would be hidden in the tenth episode of the second season.[5] Murphy stated he wanted the third season to have "evil glamour" and a youth romance story similar to the first season's Violet and Tate.[5][1] He also said the season would be set in the modern day and that the show was contemplating shooting in a different place.[1] In October 2016, Murphy stated that a future season would feature a return or continuation of Coven, later confirmed as the eighth season, Apocalypse.[6][7]
Exterior views of Miss Robichaux's Academy were provided by the Buckner Mansion, a 19th-century Greek Revival structure situated in New Orleans' Garden District.[2] The debut episode titled "Bitchcraft" drew 5.54 million viewers, making it the most-watched episode of American Horror Story up to that point.[8]
What the cited sources add
Donahue noted the season was "called out as glorified slave-torture porn in the US" and stressed the importance of handling slavery and sexual assault storylines responsibly.[9][10] The Michigan Daily gave Coven a B+, stating its conclusion "never quite matched the high standard it set for itself throughout the season"[11][10] Minear also stated that not all characters would be witches, despite the title.[3]
