Making and release

FX renewed the series for a fifth season on October 13, 2014, with an October 2015 premiere date.[1] In February 2015, Lady Gaga joined the show, and Murphy stated she wanted her role to be "evil"[3] Production designer Mark Worthington was influenced by Timothy Pflueger and William Van Alen for the Art Deco style.[4] February 2015 was when the season's subtitle, Hotel, was officially announced.[1]

The creative team drew from classic hotel horror movies and real downtown Los Angeles hotels known for their terrible histories, such as The Cecil, which was the site where student Elisa Lam died.[5] Ryan Murphy, who co-created the series, viewed a surveillance video of Lam acting strangely shortly before her death, and this helped shape the writing for the season.[5] Filming of the main scenes started on July 14, 2015, in Los Angeles, which brought production back to the city used for the first two seasons.[6] A hotel set with six stories was constructed on the Fox studio lot.[6]

Building the lobby set, which had two stories and a functioning elevator, took seven weeks.[4] The design for the exterior of the set was modeled after the James Oviatt Building located in Downtown Los Angeles.[4]

What the cited sources add

Actor Denis O'Hare revealed that the daily rate for a single room at the Hotel Cortez is as low as $30.[7] O'Hare posted a picture showing rates up to $90 for the Parlor Suites.[7] O'Hare explained that his character, Liz Taylor, is a cross-dressing hotel bar staff member.[7] The actor stated that his character wears a black skirt and has gold-painted nails.[7]

A short clip titled "Jeepers Peepers" shows an eye peeping through a keyhole in the Hotel Cortez.[7] Another clip shows a stained mattress haunting the hotel's corridor with an eye poking from inside.[7] A "Children of the Corn"-inspired clip shows blonde kids huddled around the hotel's stairwells.[7]
