The Premise: A Genie Stuck in the Wrong Century

When the Norton family moves into a new home, a casual exploration of the loft by widowed father Philip and his two teenage daughters, Emma and Sophie, leads to the discovery of a golden lamp. A single rub sets free Adil, a young genie from the city of Balamkadaar who has been trapped inside the vessel for roughly a millennium. Adil's backstory is both tragic and comedic: born in the fourth century in the suburbs of Balamkadaar, he was only a first-year student at the School for Genie Arts and Sciences when he accidentally became lodged in a lamp. That lamp was stolen from the school, ended up forgotten in Ali Baba's cave for about a century, and passed through many hands before landing in the Norton attic. Because Adil never completed his training, his magic is unreliable and wishes rarely come out as intended. This central conceit—a well-meaning but incompetent supernatural being living with a modern British family—drove the show's humour across all four series and 78 episodes, broadcast on Nickelodeon UK from May 2006 to December 2010.
