Making and release
O'Dowd described Moone Boy as a funny show with animation and many laughs.[2] O'Dowd added that this would not have happened at any other channel.[2] O'Dowd stated that filming in Ireland was crucial, and he praised Sky for being very supportive of that location choice.[2] The DVD for the first season became available on 15 October 2012.[3]
A DVD release of the second season occurred on 31 March 2014.[3] ABC gave a "Put-pilot" commitment in October 2014 for a potential American adaptation, with Chris O'Dowd attached as writer and producer but not as a cast member.[4]
What the cited sources add
The Guardian review described Moone Boy as "the most life-affirming delight to have hit our screens in a long time."[5] The review noted the show is "surreal, within decent limits" and "derivative, but I think the derivations are happily if tacitly acknowledged."[5] The Guardian stated the show was written by Chris O'Dowd and Nick Vincent Murphy.[5] The review described the tale of Martin Moone growing up in Boyle, County Roscommon, in 1989.[5]
The IFTA website describes Sean Murphy, played by Chris O'Dowd, as the imaginary friend of Martin Moone.[6]
