Lore & Background
The series begins with an ecological collapse in 2040, after which Oslo residents create numerous domes for survivors. Those inside are protected from pollution, pandemics, extreme weather, and social unrest, while those outside live in impoverished conditions with squalid housing and health risks. About 100 years later, Anton becomes curious about females, but Haven (Dome 16) is strictly monitored by AI. He sneaks into air conditioning tunnels to voyeuristically watch female guest workers showering, but falls onto an outsider, Emma, who punches him. Anton and his family are shamed; Emma's mother Unn negotiates compensation. Emma later exaggerates her ordeal as attempted rape to the activist group 99%, but eventually rescues Anton and bonds with him.
Reader's Guide
Dome 16 explores themes of ecological collapse, class division, and surveillance through its premise of domed societies. The series won three technical awards at Gullruten 2023, highlighting its production values in green production, visual effects, and lighting design. Its narrative follows teenage protagonists from opposite sides of the dome divide, addressing issues of shame, activism, and family loyalty. The show's depiction of a future shaped by climate denial—embodied by Anton's ancestor Sveinung, a former minister and climate change denier—adds a cautionary layer.
